Tristan Mason
Tristan Mason Photography – E Y E S A W Creative Inspired by the Hyperrealism Art movement from the 1970s, I have circled back to its roots in photography. My work centres around tight composition, mood or feel, and timbre, with my colour work in particular focussing on presenting everyday artefacts, objects, and scenes in a new, dynamic, and hyperrealistic fashion, often obscuring the origin of the source material, turning them into objects of visual desire. My black and white works are in a more “street photography” style, with an “as I see it” view, relying heavily on composition and tone.
Technically my work is almost exclusively created on iPhone cameras across a broad set of models, from the original SE to the 15 Pro, utilising Computational Photography and HDR. All images are shot and edited on-device using the standard hardware and software tools that come with iOS (Camera app and Apple’s Photos app), only occasionally bringing in another app by the iOS plug-in architecture for an additional feature for image enhancement.
Historically I have had a career in computers, recently moving almost exclusively to phone-based computing. At the same time, I have had a career in music in both Australia and New Zealand, but have returned to my first creative outlet: creating images, photography.
