Beginners Cyanotype workshops with Jo Bind
We are excited to have Jo coming up from the South Island to exhibit his work and also run two workshops on Saturday 1st October and an advanced workshop on Sunday 2nd October.
Jo Bind has been using cameras since being given his first film camera at the age of 8. When digital cameras became available, he quickly transitioned to the new medium and, after nearly 20 years, has started using film again in 2020, this time in medium and large format.
In 2020, he also started to explore traditional photographic printing techniques, with the main focus being on cyanotype and argyrotype, but also dabbling in gum bichromate, gum oil and platinum-palladium printing.
Workshop I – Classic Cyanotype Printing (beginner)
Saturday October 1st 1:30pm-5:30pm 4 hour workshop
Venue :4/211 Heretaunga Street Hastings
Cost: regular $160, student $110 -maximum of 8 participants
Invented by Sir John F.W. Henschel in 1842, cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic printing methods and one of the most accessible. Using a solution of fairly harmless iron compounds (as opposed to silver in more common photographic processes), cyanotypes appear as distinct and striking prints, not least due to their blue colour.
This workshop is aimed at beginners in cyanotype printing and you’ll learn how to print your own cyanotypes at home. The process does not require a darkroom and the chemicals are inexpensive – making it an ideal entry into the world of alternative photographic processes and inviting experimentation. Participants will make prints of their own photos (either from a digital file or a film negative) and learn about creating digital negatives, coating and preparing the paper, testing for proper exposure, and developing the print.
You’ll come away from this workshop with a couple of prints, a written manual of the steps discussed at the workshop, a list of supplies and suppliers and hopefully with the inspiration to experiment on your own.
While cyanotype is often used to produce photograms (by placing objects onto the light-sensitised paper), we will focus on the use of photographic negatives to produce prints in this workshop.
Cost: $160, student $110 - maximum of 8 participants

Advanced Workshop II – Multi-coloured and toned cyanotypes
Sunday October 2nd,9:30am -1:30pm 4 hour workshop
Venue : FOTOFEST HQ (details provided with registration)
Cost: regular $160, student $110 -maximum of 8 participants
Cyanotypes are stunning prints with incredible detail and tonality – especially considering that the method is 180 years old. They have just one drawback: they are monochromatic and – invariably - blue!
However, recent research by Swiss artist Annette Golaz has changed all that. Annette has studied the manipulation of cyanotype’s colour through toning with botanicals to create completely new colour palettes. She has also developed a method to create multi-coloured cyanotype prints, using colour separations and a combination of toning and bleaching.
In this workshop, you will be learning how to do duotone cyanotype prints (yellow and blue) from full-colour images. You’ll also learn about how to make true full-colour prints, although we won’t be practically doing a tri-colour print due to time constraints. Participants will learn different toning and bleaching methods and how to use them to achieve their creative vision. Participants will make prints of their own photos (either from a digital file or a film negative). Since this is an advanced workshop, we’ll look into more complex subjects like calibration for negatives and linearisation curves.
You’ll come away from this workshop with a couple of prints (duotone and toned cyanotype), a written manual of the steps discussed at the workshop, a list of supplies and suppliers and hopefully with the inspiration to develop your own processes.
To get the most our of this workshop, you ideally have some experience with either printing cyanotype or any other alternative photographic process or have attended my beginner’s workshop on Saturday.
To Book this workshop with Jo Bind, please contact Jo directly so he can provide you with details about the workshop.
